The list of the nominations

The Czech Film and Television Academy (CFTA) has just announced the nominations for the 26th Czech Lion film awards. The academics were choosing from 69 feature films, animated films and documentary features that had been distributed in the year of 2018. These films will be competing for the statuette of the Czech Lion in 15 statutory categories. The most nominations in all the categories have been obtained by the films Toman, The Hastrman and Winter Flies. The nominations for the awards in the television categories will be announced on 25th February 2019. The winners will be awarded the Czech Lions at the ceremonial gala evening that will take place in Rudolfinum on Saturday 23rd March 2019 and this year for the first time it will be hosted by Václav Kopta.

The members of the CFTA had been voting about the nominations for the 26th annual Czech Lion awards by 14th January 2019. Altogether 143 voting academics were choosing from 40 feature and animated films and 29 documentary features. Number one on the list of the candidates for the Czech Lion is the film Toman by the director and producer Ondřej Trojan with 13 nominations. Two films got 10 nominations – The Hastrman directed by Ondřej Havelka as well as the film Winter Flies directed by Olmo Omerzu. These are followed by the films Golden Sting by Radim Špaček with 9 nominations, Jan Palach by Robert Sedláček with 8 nominations and Insect by Jan Švankmajer with 5 nominations.

In the category of the best film the following five films have been nominated Jan Palach (producers Viktor Schwarcz, Jan Schwarcz, Silvia Panáková, Erik Panák, Jan Maxa), The Interpreter (producers Rudolf Biermann, Martin Šulík, Bruno Wagner), Toman (producer Ondřej Trojan), Winter Flies (producer Jiří Konečný) and Golden Sting (producer Jaroslav Bouček). The Czech Lion award for the best documentary feature can be obtained by one of the following 5 films When the War Comes (directed by Jan Gebert), King Skate (directed by Šimon Šafránek), Nothing Like Before (directed by Lukáš Kokeš, Klára Tasovská), Wilder than Wilderness (directed by Marián Polák) and The Russian Job (directed by Petr Horký).

This year as well the awards for television works of art will be presented in two categories. Three broadcasters have recommended their deeds - Czech Television, TV Nova and TV Prima. In each category the three projects that will have obtained the most votes of the academics will be announced on 25th February 2019. The winners in the categories of best television film or miniseries and best television drama series will be announced right at the ceremonial gala evening on 23th March 2019. The presidium of the CFTA will also present the award for a Unique Contribution to Czech Film during the ceremonial gala evening.

Apart from the nominations, the winners of the non-statutory awards were also announced at the CFTA press conference. The award for the best film poster was presented to Tomáš Zilvar, Lukáš Francl, Barbara Trojanová and Maxmilian Denkr, the designers of the poster for the film Toman. The director Daniel Svátek obtained the award of film fans for his film The Smiles of Sad Men.

In the category of the best actress in a leading role there are the following actresses among the nominees for the Czech Lion – Simona Zmrzlá for the film The Hastrman, Ivana Chýlková for the film Bear With Us, Jenovéfa Boková for her role in the film Moments, Zuzana Bydžovská for the film Jan Palach and Kateřina Winterová for the film Toman. The following actresses have a chance to obtain the award for the best actress in a supporting role – Jana Synková for the film Bear With Us, Tatiana Vilhelmová for her role in the film Patrimony, Kristýna Boková for the film Toman, Eliška Křenková and Lenka Vlasáková, both for their roles in the film Winter Flies.

The Czech Lion award in the category of the best actor in a leading role will belong to one of the following nominees – Karel Dobrý for the film The Hastrman, Martin Huba for the film Talks with TGM, Viktor Zavadil for his role in the film Jan Palach, Jiří Macháček for the film Toman and Tomáš Mrvík for the film Winter Flies. The winner in the category of the best actor in a supporting role can be – Jan Kolařík for his role in the film The Hastrman, Jiří Lábus for the film Insect, Jan Vondráček for the film Jan Palach, Jan František Uher for the film Winter Flies or Jan Hartl for the film Goden Sting.

The award for the best director can be obtained at the gala evening by one of the following nominees – Jan Švankmajer for the film Insect, Robert Sedláček for the film Jan Palach, Martin Šulík for directing the film The Interpreter, Ondřej Trojan for the film Toman or Olmo Omerzu for the film Winter Flies.

The CFTA also announced the nominations for the non-statutory Magnesia Awards for the best student film, which is awarded in cooperation with Karlsbad Mineral Water and Czech Film Fund. The winner of the student award can be one of the following nominated filmsSugar and Salt (directed by Adam Martinec), Home Sleep Home (directed by Adam Koloman Rybanský), The Night of the Agama (directed by Tomáš Janáček), Apart (directed by Diana Cam Van Nguyen) and One Hundred and Twenty-eight Thousand (directed by Ondřej Erban).

The ceremonial presentation of the 26th annual awards of the Czech Film and Television Academy will take place in Rudolfinum in Prague on Saturday 23rd March 2019. The whole evening will be broadcast live on CT1 channel at 8 o’clock and for the first time the gala evening will be hosted by Václav Kopta.
