The Czech Lion film awards will celebrate their 30th birthday with a record number of films

The Czech Lion film awards of the Czech Film and Television Academy (CFTA) will be handed over to the film makers for the thirtieth time next year. This will happen on Saturday 4th March 2023 in Dvořák’s Hall of Rudolfinum in Prague and the ceremony will be broadcast live by the Czech Television. The academics will start voting about the films as of today. The nominations will be announced on 16th January 2023 and it will also be broadcast live by the Czech Television.

The ceremonial gala evening will be hosted again by the director, actor and presenter Jiří Havelka. He will be supported by the experienced creative team led by the director Michael Čech, screenwriter Petr Kolečko and scenographer Jaroslav Holota. The authors of the visual style of the Czech Lion this year will be the graphic artists Jana Krchová and Ondřej Fučík.

“The Czech Lion awards will celebrate their jubilee 30th anniversary with a record number of films. This year the academics are evaluating altogether 129 movies and television works of art that were premiered this year and they will vote about awarding Czech Lions in 21 statutory categories,” mentions the managing director of CFTA Tereza Rychnovská. More than 350 respected film professionals will be evaluating 47 feature actors’ films within the 30th annual Czech Lion awards. Out of the 32 documentary features the preselection committee consisting of the members of the academy shortlisted 15 of them and the academics are about to vote about them in the first round. The academics will be also assessing 16 television works of art that had been released either on TV or on the Internet. In March the Czech Lion statuette will also go to one of the nine animated films. The 10 preselected short films that had been chosen by the committee consisting of the academics from the 25 enrolled films will be fighting for the statuette as well. The presidium of the CFTA consisting of fifteen members awards every year the unique contribution to Czech film and can also appreciate an exceptional feat in the area of audio-visual arts.

It would not be possible to realize the Czech Lions without the support of the stable partners. The mineral water Magnesia produced by the Mattoni 1873 Company has been the general partner for a long time. The main partner is innogy, which belongs to the main patrons of the local cinematography. The main media partner is the Czech Television. The glassworks Rückl, where the statuettes of Czech Lions get produced, also belongs to the family of partners.
